As some of you know, I had left the Moncton Times & Transcript for a full time staff opportunity with their sister paper The Daily Gleaner, in Fredericton. Haven't updated in quite a while so here are pix from Moncton and now from my new placement in Fredericton. I was more than happy to have the opportunity to shoot from April 2010 to July 2011 at the Moncton Times & Transcript under a few different contracts and terms. But now I'm exceptionally proud to call The Gleaner newsroom my own. Great staff, great newsroom.*This was the mayor's very first time attending. Royal's visit PEI

So this was my first Royal Tour, and hopefully not my last. I learned a few things and I hope to get a good shot or two next time, instead of the spoon fed dribble that the media pack gets. Not that it isn't hard work, but the media pens do not allow much wiggle room, not being able to even move your lens to recompose as you'd block one of the other 15 photographers and end up with a monopod upside your head. Next time I need to remember to keep my eyes open and remember to get low and switch up angles instead of just trying for the straight on shot. Some got great shots from this, but the best shot i've seen was from these folks at Goff Photos in which the photographer was far off from the pack and it paid off. The Globe and Mail played it extremely well, sans the tight crop on Goff's site. Well, here's my spoon fed dribble.

The seed of the idea goes back to when she was a teenager and her parents first told her the story of Kouchibouguac and Jackie Vautour.

With the holidays starting, I sought out freelance work in Toronto. Toronto Community News threw me a bone, and gave me a few assignments.

I came back to school in January and worked my butt off to make pictures.

Early on in my final semester, horrifying news rocked the region. I tried my hardest to sell photos. I shot everyday with the big boys, nothing was good enough to sell though. I was turned down a good 4 or 5 times before I got my break, I sold a photo to The Canadian Press. I was late for class, but it was worth it.

I was hungry for work, now that I got a tiny taste for it. I came back to Toronto for a visit, and tried shooting events on Spec all over the city. Beat out by the staffers covering events, I didn't sell anything, but I kept trying.

A few weeks later, another murder took place. I was quick on the draw although I didn't sell photos the first day, I kept in touch with CP's desk. I covered the "Perp Walk" the next week. They drove the kid into the garage, and shut the door. Shooting blind through the garage door windows 8 feet off the ground, I got very lucky and got a shot.

I re-visited the Toronto Island where I was attempting to keep the dream of a story, alive.

--February 2010. Following being kicked out of The Algonquin Island Association's Valentines Day dance for bringing outside alcohol, Jordan Hill quickly finishes his tall can of beer so he can re-enter the dance and celebrate with the rest of his island community. (Cole Burston)--

I continued to work my butt off at school. I shot almost everyday, and tried to stay on my toes.

--March 10 2010. Dr. John ter Haar, 64, has been practicing dentistry since 1973, shortly after graduating from University of Western Ontario. Dr. ter Haar, a lover of photography and Belleville native, currently practices at 42 Victoria Ave. (Cole Burston)--3

I got word that I would be spending a month in Moncton at the Times & Transcript on an internship, and hopefully a summer long contract. I packed up my (mother's) car and took off down the road to the East Coast.

The next day after arriving, I started shooting right away. Shooting features before even getting on the clock to show that I came to work, not just to be here.

While shooting an assignment I got a call saying I had just won the News Photographers Association of Canada's Student Photojournalist of the Year. Apparently I was on speaker phone at the podium at the Gala, but I couldn't hear much...just the awful band at the charity event I was shooting.

I shot things not only for the paper, but if I knew I could do better than what I produced on the clock, I went back to the event the next day and shot the way I wanted to shoot it. Apart from the papers photo restrictions.

Sport and Dance

Basketball
This weekend I had a rare opportunity. I got to shoot High School basketball in decent lighting :D. 3200 ISO at 1/800 2.8, as appose to 6400 at 1/500 1.8 that I had shot basketball at the few times before this weekend. The Ladies Basketball Classic tournament took place at the Moncton Coliseum, with a nice hardwood court and decent lights. Anyways, I shot two games this weekend, one being the championship game. In the end, Citadel High from Halifax took the title over the Riverview Royals.

Curling
I shot Curling for the first time this weekend. Interesting sport. Could use a little more light, but its not THAT bad, as they dont really move that fast.

Dance
I shot the opening night of The Nutcracker last week, as well as another dance recital at Capitol Theatre on Sunday.

I had an assignment last week for a portrait, something not too common at my paper. On average I get about 3 portraits a month. I had just bought a new soft box, and I've been dying to take it out for an assignment. This is the first time since I got it, that I've really had a good Opportunity to use it, so I did. I was told it was for the Salon Magazine that the Telegraph-Journal puts out. I was pleasantly surprised to see a Full page print of it on Saturday morning as I arrived at the office. Anyways, it looked cool. Never seen a picture of mine printed so large!

I went to a Dog Show at the Moncton Coliseum. I originally thought it was going to be a running and jumping dog show...so I brought the 300 mm. let me tell you, it was a little awkward walking around with a giant lens that was bigger than most of the dogs. Anyways, it was an interesting experience. I took a few portraits of a few pups. While the official "Puppy Portrait Photographer" had his camera on a tripod in his booth, posing the pooches, I was crawling on the floor having dogs and their handlers step over me.

Steel Tank

I finally have the tools to develop Black and white film at my apartment (Thanks to Lum for the tanks/reels). Over my travels this summer, I shot a few rolls of HP5 and FP4. Here is a taste of what came out from the steel tank. As you can see I'm still getting the hang of developing and loading the steel reels, but its getting there.

I found a busted old 17-35 in the studio at work, and decided to throw it on and test it out. Its not really reliable as it doesn't seem to want to focus every time, and the manual focus ring won't spin, but I've been having some fun with it. A few weeks ago I was in PEI for the wedding of a friend. Nathan Rochford and Lindsay Carroll hosted a lovely wedding in Rustico, PEI, as well it was a lovely chance to see some friendly and familiar faces! The following day, my Girlfriend and I, along with a friendly face from school Charles Antoin-Augier or better known as Chuck OG, travelled to Basin Head beach: the home of the singing sands. There was a small bridge with a rushing canal of incoming seawater underneath. People would jump off the bridge, or sides of the dock-like structure, and just let the current whip you inland to the river system. Later in the day, the current reversed and would zip the helpless thrill-seekers out to the open sea, a mere 15-30 metres from the point of jump.
Anyways, I took some fun frames between my own jumps. My lens/camera is so battered up, that its starting to give some cool effects. Somewhat of a vignette, and mostly a soft focus effect.

Funny story here. I parked beside a lake to shoot a feature/wait till it wasn't super dangerous to drive through the rain. Then these ducks looked at me and they started waddling over. It took them about 3 mintues to waddle the 10 yards to get to right outside my door. I watched them for a bit, they were loving the rain. Of course it let up a few minutes later, and i was on my way.

I got some VERY exciting news Saturday night. Heather Hiscox called me from Toronto and announced that I had won News Photographers Association of Canada's Student Photojournalist of the Year. The awards for NPAC Pictures of the Year were announced during a gala which I couldn't attend.
Thanks to the judges and sponsors of the competition, as well the NPAC staff for organizing a great weekend (at least I heard it was great.)

Pollett River Run 2010

Yesterday I went to the Pollett River Run in Elgin, New Brunswick....wow.

Thousands of people brought their ATV's, 4x4's, trucks and beer to the 2010 Pollett River Run in Elgin, New Brunswick. The river run is an annual event home to people floating down the Pollett River on anything from canoes, kayaks, inflatables, and homemade rafts. Windmills and Fundy

It was my day off, so I went exploring again.
I see Windmills in the distance almost everyday so I decided to check them out.
Very cool feeling to hear the sound of the blades cutting through the air, and the wind gusting down at you.

I accidentally ran into a Motorcycle gang's hangout. I didn't know exactly who they were at the time, I only saw a big sign with motorcyclists and girls drawn on, a smashed car, a run down house, a little shed kind of thing (in picture), and a sign that told me rudely that I was trespassing and to turn around. I googled them and found out their pretty active in organized crime, and gang wars and murders and all that fun stuff. They call themselves 'The Bacchus'.

Finally made it to the windmills.

Just to show how HUGE these things actually are...if you can see it...there is my car in the middle at the bottom.

No more volcanic ash!

I finally made it to Fundy National park, where I wanted to end up. There wasn't much there, just empty parking lots and a steady gust of wind flowing through the whole park.

I'll save the "Beautiful Scenery" for the summertime.

Exploring the Moncton area lead me a few places today. It was also really nice out today so I had blast driving through little roads and overlooking the whole city at some points.
I discovered a pipe that runs alongside a road, and it spews out "The best tasting water" so I was told by 4 of the people that were filling up jugs of water while I was there.

Abel Arsenault stops along Gorge Rd. to fill up jugs from a spring along the side of the road. Arsenault has been filling up jugs here for his family to drink for 20 years now.

Confusing story here. He had the stanley cup in his shop 'Riverview Tire' over a year ago, and this woman (in picture) wanted to see the cup because her dad's name is on it...but she missed the cup by an hour...it was already on a plane.
This man placed ads everywhere for months trying to find out who the woman was and how to contact her, and has heard nothing until seeing her picture in an easter spread in the Times & Transcript. The Cup is coming back to Fredericton next week, and he wants to get a hold of this woman and take her to see the cup with her father's name on it.

Don't worry if you didn't understand that...i'm never good at telling jokes.
But seriously it's hard to understand.

Music Festival is happening in the GMA (Greater Moncton Area).
2 full weeks of kids with instruments.

So i've been doing a little exploring around my new home base.

on the way to visit the water, I came across the tail of a grass fire.

Yesterday I went to the zoo with a friend and her family. There were only a few animals out, but it was nice nonetheless.

Then a man had a kite growing out of him....just joking, it was a nice day and he was trying to fly his kite with a friend. I filed another frame to the paper, so I don't want to put that up, just incase the paper decides to use it.

I took a series of shots from the Toronto Island to illustrate the change in the Toronto Skyline when 8:30 rolled around...I didn't notice that much change. The CN tower turned off their glowing lights, but the Rogers Centre kept theirs on until around 8:45. All in all...it was a disappointing turn out.

I was assigned to cover a court "appearance" yesterday, and I knew it would be a challenge, as you have only a limited number of chances you get, possibly only one frame. The van that was carrying the suspect, was very very tough to penetrate with flash and no one got a picture. Then we noticed little windows at the top of the garage where the vehicle had parked, inside the court house. The media that was there, ran up to the windows, firing off frames and rolling footage, but no one got anything. A few minutes later i decided to take another frame, because the windows were so high, no one (except a tall friend with the aid of a stepping stool) couldn't see in, but I looked into my camera and I screamed, 'I GOT HIM, HES IN THERE'. Everyone swarmed the windows, firing off frames, and very few of us got a usable picture of the "appearance".

It is very cool to see something you worked hard on, seen by so many people.

I asked for 15 minutes, but because he was super busy, I got 1 minute. Shot off 11 frames, and he was gone.

I went to visit my uncle (mother's brother) today in Richmond Hill.
Alan is fighting glioblastoma, a very aggressive malignant brain tumour.

My mom brought the dog to see her brother, she figured it would brighten up his day.
Alan has a variety of issues going on in his brain right now, and got very aggravated when the dog walked on his carpet.
He warmed up to the dog, and laid down on the carpet beside the dog, while continuing conversations with my mom of what the future holds, and issues he is running into.
